 Ranch & Trail Horses  ***sold***
Our saddle horses are mostly used for ranch work and trail rides, some of them might be used for a season on a guest ranch were the guests enjoy working cattle with the cowboys.
This country is pretty rough and these horses are sure footed and relaxed when it comes to crossing streams or climbing rocky hills. They are easy to handle, friendly and colorful.
Most horses for sale were here for several years. I like the challenge to work with new horses and see them develop, so some must go for others to come - and some will never be for sale.

Please contact per phone at 307-756-3907 or per e-mail heike@waywest.de with any questions you may have.

This page is reserved for our SOLD HORSES - just to see some of the old crew:

*** sold ***   Meadow  -  2012 Halfarabian palomino mare

5 year old filly, 15 hands, very correct put together. Meadow has about 60 rides at the ranch, used to rough country, easy going, leads the trail or travels calmly in the back. She loves (!) working cattle and does watch a cow. Sire Arabian, dam Quarter Horse, both unknown and she sells grade.
She is not a beginner or kids horse just yet.
She loves people, always the first one at the gate.

Asking $1800  ***sold***

*** sold ***    Sheila  -  2004 Half Arabian gray mare
12 year old gray mare (born buckskin colored), sire AQHA (Watch Two Twelve), dam Arabian. Born and raised at the ranch. She's been on the back burner for a long time, and when we finally started riding her she's been cowboyed on quite a bit, making her a bit anxious.
She's broke, knows how to travel in rough country, been behind cows (and watches them), and has roped a mechanical roping dummy. She has no buck, but she is very quick and would not be suitable for a novice rider.
I am using her this summer and I consider here a lot of fun to ride - don't let my honesty fool you, this is a good horse! And very pretty to boot.

*** sold ***    JR Vaquero Roan  -  2005 AQHA bay roan gelding
Very good looking roan ranch gelding, stands about 15 hand. Vaquero has been roped off, but I would not consider him finished, nor would I call him a great roping prospect. He is very well broke (neck reins, yields to leg pressure) and he is comfortable in rough country (steep rocky hills, water crossings, timber down fall). We bought him for our guest business where he turns out to be too fine for most of our riders.
He is an in-your-pocket personality and on the lower end of the pecking order.
Trail mount for an advanced rider with light hands or ranch horse prospect.

*** sold ***    Pina Colada  -  2009 bay mare
Pina Colada is an all around family horse. She'll go on trail rides or work cattle, kids can ride her in the corral, she has a super comfortable rocking chair galopp and is all togehter easy going, first one at the gate to greet you.

She is almost bombproof, she is safe enough for a beginner, but I have to admit that she once turned around and tried to walk back to the barn when I had a beginner on her. Kids in the arena can ride her without problems, maybe do not get her in a trott. We do not only use her for trail rides but also to work cattle, she walks off by herself just fine.
The only bad thing I can say about her is that she is a bit difficult to bridle. She is good with her ears, but she does get her head up high when we put the bridle on.

Asking $2400  ***sold***

*** sold ***    Mexi  -  2010 sorrel mare
Very cowy little mare, stands about 14.2 to 14.3 hands, loves to work cattle, but is also a good trail mount. She has been roped off, is light on the reins, with a big motor. Very mellow but not a kids horse since she is a good traveller.

She will cross any natural obstacle from creeks to fallen timber, works off by herself and has absolutely no vices.

Very good looking mare.

Asking $2600  ***sold***

*** sold ***    Tequila  -  2004 gray gelding
This gelding is by Dorky Frosty Spark (Frosty Feature), and out of Della, a big and stout build proven ranch mare with a very good disposition, AQHA registered.
"Tequila" fell, as far as training goes, through the cracks like it sometimes happens when ranch life gets too busy. He had 30 days professional training in 2008, and had not been handled for several years until we started using him lightly in 2013. He is gentle, no buck whatsoever, but still fairly inexperienced and can be somewhat spooky.
He is a very stout, thick build, app. 15.1 to 15.2 hd.

*** sold ***    Velvet  -  2003 black AQHA mare
Velvet stands 16 hands, well broke with very nice gaits. She has been used as a ranch and trail horse, however, I would not recommend her for cattle work as she is more on the laid back side and prefers trail rides much over chasing cows around. I purchased her as a mount for my nephew, a beginner rider, who loved her gentleness and easy going nature.
Her size doesn't make her a perfect kids horse, but if you are looking for a pretty family horse that will keep up on trails and not get antsy you may want to meet her. She is used to rough country, going up and down steep hills, through water and creeks and over fallen timber.
We used her at the ranch for guests and she is doing very well, following around, but also not getting antsy when staying behind while her rider is unmounting. She is a great follower but not a leader type, I would see her in a trail or outfitter string rather than a horse that goes out alone even though I've done it last year with her.

Asking $1200 obo

***sold*** I am sure you gonna love her, Brittney and Dusty! :-)

*** sold ***    Docsee Dun It  -  2007 AQHA buckskin gelding
This gelding is offered by a neighbor, this is what they have to say about the horse:

Docsee Dun It is a 14.2 hands buttermilk buckskin gelding without markings. He is a registered Quarter Horse (#4806767, Sire: Dun Its Lucky Charm, Dam: Big Horn Docsee) trained in reining and cutting for Working Cow Horse competitions.
No buck but lots of speed. Cute, gentle, super smooth to ride. Loads well, stands well for the farrier, no behavioral problems.
We bought Dun It for better riders on our guest ranch but he's just too fast for most. He works best when ridden alone and in the arena.
We have used him as a ranch horse moving livestock. Have thrown a rope off him here and there but he's not a trained rope horse. He has a scar on one of his hind legs due to a pasture accident when he was a foal but he has never been lame.
My husband and I are both over 6 ft tall. Otherwise we would keep Dun It for ourselves. Hate to see him go.

His pedigree can be found on allbreedpedigree.com, he is a grandson of Hollywood Dun It.

Asking $2250  ***sold***

*** sold ***    Dancer  -  2008  dun/buckskin gelding
Dancer stands about 16 hands, sure a tall horse. He was used as a ranch horse since he was broke, working cattle, brandings, doctoring, you name it, he's done it.

Dancer is more on the laid back side, not lazy but also not high strung. Very friendly, easy to catch, and towards the bottom of the picking order in the herd.

We use Dancer at the ranch, most anybody can ride him and push cows around with him, he is a bit too tall for a kids horse, though.

Dancer is out of registered AQHA parents but not registered himself.

Asking $2400  ***sold***

*** sold ***    Corona  -  2005 palomino mare
Corona has been used at the ranch, been roped off and worked cattle. She is very tall (true 16.2 hands) without being bulky. Very friendly disposition and easy to handle. Crosses natural obstacles like creeks, water, fallen timber and such, used to get up and down steep canyon sides. She is not a fast horse but will speed up for a stray yearling, will probably do better for trails than a full time ranch horse due to the fact that she will travel but is not really fast. Perfect family horse that can go to the neighbors and push some cattle, too.

Despite her impressive size she tends to be more on the bottom of the pecking order.
She was born and raised in the Badlands of South Dakota and is not registered.

Offering Corona for sale is not an easy decision for me, she is a very likeable horse willing to do anything that is asked out of her. But she is too tall for me to keep (I am 5' 5" and had too many injuries this year to get on easily).

*** sold ***    Pearl  -  2004 black mare
We are listing this mare for a friend, please contact for phone number.
Pearl has been used for ranch and trail in rough country. She turns on a dime and travels forever. Has some roping experience. Very cowy. Also some barrel racing potential. She is very quick and needs an experienced rider to keep up with her. No buck, safe and sane, but not a beginners horse. Pearl stands about 15 hands, grade.

*** sold ***    PaddysBarMan  -  2006 buckskin AQHA gelding

*** sold ***   Charlie  -  2006 sorrel sabino gelding
.. Charlie stands about 15 hands and weighs in with 1000 lbs. He was born and raised in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, he is used to rough country, timber, water crossings and rocky ground; his former owner roped calves at brandings with him.

At this time we use him at the ranch for trail rides and to work cattle, riders are usually somewhat experienced and they describe him as "funny", probably because he is not a push button horse but has character. He is easy going, neck reins, will work with and without other horses and has absolutely no bad habits (no bucking, no rearing, no bolting).

He blends in with the other horse in the middle of the pecking order.

*** sold ***    JP Montana Roan  -  2003 gray AQHA mare
This beautiful mare with the long dark mane stands 15 hands and is stout build with great feet. She is gentle to be around and has been used extensively on the ranch. She is a started break-away and head horse, however, we do not compete and have used her only at the ranch.
She is a grandgranddaughter of Sugar Bars and Go Man Go, her sire was a herd sire for Leachman's Hairpin Cavvy out of Billings, Montana (known for very cowy ranch horses).

She is safe and sane and could make a youth rider win his first performances or be a working horse deluxe with great handle.

 *** sold ***  Rusty - 2006 grade Appaloosa gelding
Rusty is a 5yr old Appaloosa gelding, stands 14.1 to 14.2 hands and is very correct put together.
He is green broke, which means that he knows all the basics, but still needs reinforcement to do the right things. He has been started riding outside and already crosses water, fallen timber, goes up and down steep, rocky canyon walls and can lead or follow a group of riders. He shows a lot of interest in working cattle and is all around a very fast and smart learner. He doesn't offer to buck and will make a nice trail horse once he has some more saddle time on him, at this time he needs an experienced rider to take him along.
He has a friendly, curious personality, though is wary of his surroundings. There is not a mean bone in him, he is always willing and eager to please. He walks over tarps and can be petted with plastic bags, he will not jerk away but be alert when somebody moves quick around him. Very good ground manners.

***sold*** Linda took Rusty home to the beautiful Black Hills to become her personal guide horse - he'll be out and about having fun!

*** sold ***  Sidney Kool Skipper -  1999 bay APHA gelding
Sidney is that all around "great to have at the ranch"-horse that everyone is looking for. He is easy to handle, super friendly, easy to catch, easy to ride, well broke, smooth gates, ... and he is even easy to look at with a perfectly proportioned body, straight legs and a very pretty head which earned him the nick name "sweet face" at the ranch.
He is neither lazy nor a speed machine, which makes him the perfect mount for anybody from novice to experienced rider; maybe not a horse for little kids as he is soft on the reins and has some go in him.
Sidney is used to rough country, crosses water, timber, goes up and down very steep canyons and rocky ground. He will lead a group, follow a group or ride out alone. He was started in working cattle and starts to show some eye for cows. He does handle a rope and has been used at brandings, but he would not have the speed for a roping horse if that is what you are looking for.
He stands app. 15.1 hands and is stout build.

***sold*** I am very excited about his new home - I am sure he will fit in great! Have fun with him, Cody! :)

*** sold ***  Payday -  2001 Appaloosa gelding
Payday came to us as a trade-in. He has been used on the trails and worked on a cattle ranch. He doesn't have any bad habits, no buck or rear or anything like this. He rides out easily and crosses creeks and such without problems. He has a very friendly personality, walks up to me in the corral and is easy to catch even on pasture. He is not spooky or flighty, I've ridden him alone in very rough country with a lot of wild life, he didn't shy once.
He is an easy horse to ride in general, but he is fine on cues thus probably not a kids horse nor would I recommend him for total beginners. Novice riders will get along with him. I broke my collar bone and he is the horse I am riding as I can control him with one hand and he stands still when mounting/unmounting no matter if alone or in a group with other riders. He neck reins very well and is not used to draw reining (thus not the best choice for kids or beginners).
At this time he is my go-to horse for tough work, I sorted yearlings with him, moved horses, and doctored steers - all which he did great, however, he is neither a roping nor a cutting horse. He can build up a lot of speed but walk on a long rein after a fast run, he doesn't get hot. He is really fun to ride and his gaits are very comfortable.
Payday has impeccable ground manners, stands app 15 hands tall and is stout and correct build.

*** sold ***  JDS TITANS OBSESSION  -  2000 APHA Golden Palomino Overo Sabino gelding
Everybody loves "Hollywood". He is like a big puppy dog that became a horse. I get frowns whenever somebody at the ranch hears that I am willing to sell him - how dare I to part from such a cute horse! I am wondering myself ...

Hollywood is an 11 year old Halter bred Paint gelding, registered with APHA. He was a stud prospect but didn't fill out as much as a Halter breeder likes to see, thus was never used for breeding but gelded and used off and on under saddle.
His former owner had him for 9 years before he came to me in Winter 2009/10.

He loves people and can stand forever to be brushed. He handles great, loads, trailers, ties, stands to get his feet done, no vices. He is very smooth gated and moves out nicely.

Last summer he was ridden on a ranch with various, rough country (fallen trees, creeks, rocks, steep canyon walls) to learn the basics to become a great partner on the trail.
He is very fine and loves to move. He has a very easy and responsive handling and carries his head nice, at this point a rider with soft hands would be best with him even though he is safe and sane. No buck or any other undesirable behavior.

*** sold ***  Classy Blue Fox  -  2005 bay roan AQHA gelding
"Viento" moved cattle on a ranch in rough terrain: canyons, fallen timber, creeks, mud, and rocky country. He is surefooted and will cross any obstacle found in ranching country.
He has been roped off of and has drug calves at brandings.
He started on working cow horse maneuvers (tracking cattle, beginning
cutting, working cattle on fence) at a Pat Parelly clinic in summer 2010.
Viento is very fast and he does like to travel, so he may not be a good kid or beginner horse but gets a days work done at the ranch.
He has a calm disosition, though, and has pulled a plastic sled with a child on it while being ground driven.
He handles good on the ground, trims, loads, stands tied and is hobble broke.
He stands app 15 hands, 1200lbs, and is registered with AQHA; Zippo Pine Bar, Two Eyed Jack, Te N Te, Leo, and Three Bars bred.

*** sold ***  Bo  -  1994 grade palomino gelding
A friend of ours sells this older but very well broke and gentle palomino gelding. Bo stands app 14.3 hands and is fairly stout build.
He has been used at a Guest Ranch for the last three years and has been a very popular horse in the dude string. The ranch has a working cattle guest program and their horses have to work 6 hours plus through rough terrain almost daily, and Bo, who is sound and has always been ridden without shoes, can not keep up with these long hours any more.
Kids can ride him for an hour or two a day without a problem (also adults). He is not dead but he won’t take off without being asked and he is not buddy-sour at all. No buck and no spook. Smooth gaits. He can also be ridden bareback
Bo is very gentle and likes people, he neck reins and has an all-around willing attitude and is a perfect beginners’ horse

He will need to be on senior feed and good hay as he lost some weight due to age.

Please inquire to good home.

*** sold ***  Smart Smokey Mark  -  2004 AQHA gray gelding
.. Smokey was bred at the ranch and started under saddle in 2007. We used him a lot in 2008. He has not been ridden much in 2009 and 2010 and sells green broke. He had app 50 outside rides trail and working cattle.
He is a very people friendly horse with a laid back disposition, more on the slower side under saddle. He still needs more experience before he can be called a beginner horse, but he sure will make one, or a nice, safe trail partner.
Smokey is registered with AQHA, but, unfortunately, his papers got lost. He sells grade.

*** sold ***  INDY  -  2003 sorrel overo paint gelding
7year old sorrel overo paint gelding with a beautiful flaxen mane and dark eyes surrounded by dark skin, 14.1 hands and stout build.
Indy is out of a Quarter Horse mare and by an APHA registered stallion (Painted Robin blood lines). He handles great, ties, stands to get his feet done and doesn't care about things like plastik bags patted around his head and body. Trailers well, good with wormings, shots and flyspray. He was started under saddle last fall, had the winter off due to harsh weather conditions and is ridden on the ranch (rough cow country) since late spring 2010. He crosses creeks, downfall, rides through timber, up and down steep canyons walls, and is used to going alone, in groups, or away from groups of other riders. Has chased a cow or two and shows a lot of interest.
He does exceptional well under saddle and is very responsive. He never offered to buck or showed any other undesirable behavior but has been easy to train from the beginning on.

Indy has the makings to become a great mount for novice to experienced riders, he is safe and sane enough to take a beginner on the trail at this time but should have the chance to get more experience himself with an intermediate rider and up.

Click here for more pictures of Indy

***sold*** ... Indy will be working at a cattle&guest ranch - with his mellow disposition he will make a great guest horse one day, but first ranchers Nick & Doerte will make sure that his training is continued! :)

*** sold ***  Plenty O Whiskey -  2005 AQHA gelding
He is a grandson of Paddys Irish Whiskey, his dam a granddaughter of Doc's Hickory; Peppy San Badger, Docs Starlight, Doc O'Dynamite on his papers, Mr San Peppy, Sugar Badger, Doc Olena, Docs Prescription and Doc Bar (twice) just slipped off his papers - what more needs to be said about his potential?

"Plenty" is about 15.2 hands tall. He was professional trained as a two year old and ridden off and on at the ranch during the next winter. He has not been ridden since but we will give him some saddle time if somebody is seriously interested in him.

He has the potential to excel in any arena event. His breeder swears he would run barrels - I think he would eat up a cow team penning or roping.

He is very reasonable priced due to him not being used.

Plenty O Whiskey is located in Rapid City, SD.

*** sold ***  Stweety Birds King  -  2000 AQHA palomino gelding
10 yr old AQHA registered palomino gelding, 15.2 hands and very stout build, very well broke.
"Birdy" is used to rough country, rides alone or in the group, neckreins, has a good stop and general gait transitions, smooth gaits and carries himself very well. His groundmanners are great, he stands tied, loads, trims/shoes, takes wormers and shots, is easy to catch and is all around easy to get along with, also towards other horses. He has no bad habits whatsoever but is not a kids horse or for the total beginner which is why the owner wants to sell him. I am using him at a cattle ranch at this time and everybody who rides him speaks highly of him.
He is a trail horse deluxe with power steering or works cattle with the the strength to go all day long.
A fun horse to ride for intermediate riders and up.

*** sold ***  MY BACKSTREET BOY  -  1999 APHA Sorrel Overo gelding
Backstreet is a trail and ranch horse deluxe for the less confident rider. No holes in this horse, there is nothing he does not do well behaved. He may not be the fastest horse on the ranch but he will hold his own in any speed asked for, a perfect confidence builder and safe for anybody to ride - which is the reason why he is not for sale at this time: my mother (69 years old, very novice rider) comes to visit me and I need a horse for her to ride in August 2010.
Until then Backstreet is used at a cattle ranch with various, rough country (fallen trees, creeks, rocks, steep canyon walls) that takes guests out to work cattle - no head to tail riding but the horses need to go off on their own to herd cattle. He neckreins and yields to leg pressure - despite his beginner friendly disposition he is very well trained.
Backstreet gets along well with other horses, he is usually more on the bottom of the pecking order. He stands 15.2 hands and is registered with APHA.

*** sold ***  SHILO  -  2005 HAHR bay tobiano gelding
Coming 5 yr old bay tobiano HAHR registered 7/8 Arabian-Paint gelding, 15 hands.
Shilo was professionally started under saddle in spring 2009 and has experience in rough country and working cattle while riding him all summer on a ranch.
He never offered to buck and has a really soft face. No spook in this horse either. He took his first ride outside like a pro, goes up and down steep, rocky hills like a goat and surprised even our not easy to please cowboy on his second ride out by just working along like a seasoned ranch gelding. Already worked some cattle on his third ride and loves it.
He will lead a trail, follow calmly or go on a ride alone - there is nothing he wouldn't give a try.
Ties, trims, loads, takes wormer and shots. Very people oriented horse, smart and willing to please. Used to cats and dogs around his legs and in his tail - never tries to kick at them.

If you are looking for a horse with the looks, intelligence and people friendly personality of an Arabian but the laid back disposition of a Quarter Horse Shilo is your guy!

We do not ride much in the winter (too much snow), however, when I needed to pick up a horse in a far pasture I pulled Shilo out to do the 5 mile ride and lead a 2year old barely ever handled horse back to the trailer. I hadn't used Shilo for two month but he just walked off like we were catching young horses every day.

*** sold ***  SLY  -  2005 sorrel overo gelding
4 yr old sorrel overo paint gelding with a beautiful flaxen mane and dark eyes surrounded by dark skin, 15 hands.
Sly was started as a 2 year old, ridden of and on as a three year old and went for a ride at least every other day since last spring.
He is a sweet guy easy to handle, very gentle and responsive. He is very laid back and I have already novice riders riding him once in a while, but considering his young age I do recommend that he still gets some saddle time with somebody who knows what he/she is doing.
He will make a great kids horse with one more season of saddle time on him. Would make a great project for an older kid to finish him as well.
Used in rough country for working cattle and trail rides, very flashy eye catcher, people lover, no vices, no buck, loads, trims, ties, takes wormer and shots - there is no mean bone in this horse. He doesn't mind cats and dogs and is good with other horses (lower place in the pecking order).
He had a bad wire cut as a colt and his lower and upper lip have some scars. This doesn't bother him a bit, but it is visible.

***sold*** Thanks, Jeff - hope to hear how Sly is doing!

*** sold ***  DICE  -  2000 Black and White tovero paint gelding
9 yr old black and white paint gelding, 15.1 hands, very well broke, kids horse deluxe.
Dice was used to work cattle and trail ride, he spend two seasons on a ranch where guests ride with the cowboys to do ranch chores. Older kids (>10) loved to ride Dice because he is so cute, and adults enjoyed his smooth gates and willing attitude.

Very flashy horse with good confirmation and disposition. People lover, no vices, no buck, anybody can ride and beginners do great on him but he is not "dead broke" in the sense of putting a three year old kid on him and send them out to bring some cows home. That takes a really dead horse ... ;-)

***sold***   I am sure you have a lot of fun with him, Joan!

*** sold ***  SC TWO EYED NUGGET  -  2003 AQHA palomino mare
Nugget is green broke and will be worked with daily until end of October or sold. She has extensive ground work, is good with her feet, ties and trailers well. We are riding her on the ranch in rough country and she is picking up quickly; very smart horse. No buck or jump in her but she is laid back with exceptionally smooth gates and a soft face. She will make a nice ranch or trail horse and has the disposition to be husband and kid safe too.
Nugget is DNA'd but has not been exposed yet.
She is genetically a Palomino but displays the rare amber champagne color.

Buy her now and pick her up end of October (at least 30 days of riding by then).
